3rd June 2006 - 1540
The IRT were tasked by Humber Coastguard after reports from Sunderland Coastwatch of a small inflatable rib with apparent engine failure drifting out to sea.
The ribs engine had indeed failed but the occupants decided they would carry on with their planned fishing trip outside of the piers.
The team made contact with the casualty vessel just south of the harbour entrance and confirmed that the occupants were ok.
They declined an offer of help by means of a tow back to shore and proceeded to battle against the wind and tide back to the safety of the shore.
Sunderland Lifeboat launched in order to escort them in and ensure the tired occupants made it back safely.
The boat was met by the team and details collected by a member of Sunderland Coastguard who offered some safety advice inline with the current Sea Smart campaign.
The teams stood down after nearly 1 hour and 20 minutes.
